Here at Magna Beds, beds are our passion. Internationally, they come in all shapes and sizes, evolving over time in style and design. Our team have listed some of their favourites below to give you a flavour of international sleeping arrangements and how different they can be!
Whilst we are used to the traditional Western bed, many countries have interesting histories and designs. If you are looking for new design ideas for your living space then be sure to read on to find out more!
The traditional western bed
Beds in countries such as Northern America and the U.K are usually the main feature of a bedroom and its makeup. Ranges have increased in recent years, with double, single, king, queen and emperor size beds available if you have the space to accommodate them - all of which can be customised with a wide range of headboards.
Headboards have increased in popularity, especially the floorstanding variety. Many opt for a headboard to give their bed more structure and have a strong visual impact. If your bed features a floor standing headboard, it can really frame the design for a striking visual impact.
Recent studies have shown the average person only changes their bed once every 15-20 years so it’s essential to get one that is perfect for you.
Turkey
Whilst having gained huge popularity in mainland Europe and beyond, Turkey has one of the most popular beds known in this day and age.
The Ottoman bed, a derivative of the infamous Ottoman empire, is a bed that really packs a punch. Introduced by the Turkish to European countries as late as the 18th Century as it provided a new contemporary method of rest.
With a well built structure the Ottoman Divan Bed is a sturdy option making them family proof. Batter yet, they are a bed type renowned for their practicality with built in storage space underneath the bed frame.
Magna Beds have an extensive range of Divan Ottoman beds. We have up to 5 sizes available:
- 3ft Single
- 4ft Small Double
- 4ft 6in Double
- 5ft King Size
- 6ft Super King
We also offer customisation on our beds with interchangeable colours and fabrics for your bed, over 40 in total made with the finest of fabrics sourced within West Yorkshire.
Italy
The Italian ethos for anything in life has traditionally been luxury and ‘glam’.
Their beds and bedrooms tend to have a lot of time and effort put into their design process, and with Italians being regarded as romantics, it comes as no surprise that their approach to interior design is resonated within this.
World renowned artwork and artists from Italy boast timeless colours, designs and motives. Our range of Art Deco Beds are a great option for achieving this look.
Our handcrafted collection is made with you in mind as we use ethically sourced materials that are built to last, leaving you more time and effort elsewhere for maintaining your home.
Qatar
Qatar has only been a country officially for 51 years, however the nation is rich with culture and history as it is classified as an Arabian country. They are also hosting this year’s World Cup competition, hopefully we see some success from our England team!
Arabian beds are one of the most aesthetically pleasing beds as they showcase different features and materials to finish off the look. They are low in height making them easy to access and are usually made up with vibrant colours and textiles, and don’t forget the pillows. Plenty of pillows are to be expected!
Many also opt for a veil type material to go around the bed as many frames in these regions possess beams on each side of the frame. Similar to what you would see in stately homes such as Windsor Castle.
Japan
Japan is world renowned for their entertainment industry and revolutionary technology. Not so much for their beds, however the cultural differences in their beds are very interesting!
The traditional bed for the Japanese is the Shikibuton. Whilst heavily adapted in the west, Shikitons are similar to Futons and are generally found in a spare room or even a hotel room.
Shikibuton are a lot different from, say, an upholstered bed, they tend to not have a headboard and do not have a raised structure. Interestingly there are health benefits for sleeping closer to the floor with cleaner air being available when breathing in your sleep.
Greece
Ancient Greece is a monumental historical nation boasting some of the most well documented wars, leaders and technological advancements.
“Open your mouth and shut your eyes and see what Zeus will send you.” - Aristophanes
Zeus will more than likely send you what was known as a “Kline” the Ancient Greek idea of a bed. They were only to be used by both men and their courtesans, used for socialising, relaxing and sleeping. Fun fact, this is also where the English word “recline” comes from.
Whilst we do not stock traditional Kline beds, you can sleep in absolute luxury like your favourite historical figures with our Luxury Collection.
