A wall mounted headboard is a great choice to customise the look of your bedroom without affecting the pre-existing room layout or furniture – not even your current bed, as the headboard would be attached to the wall rather than the bed frame.
Wall mounted headboards are available in a variety of colours, patterns and fabrics, and while this gives you the freedom and plenty of choice to decorate your bedroom as you wish, the installation process is usually the same for all wall mounted headboards.
The overall procedure is simple, but there are a few things to consider if you want to avoid a DIY fail. Read the following steps to correctly install a wall mounted headboard.
Measure your wall mounted headboard
First, you want to ensure your headboard will hang on the wall exactly where you want it. You can do so by taking accurate measuring of
- The distance between the hooks in the back of the headboard
- The distance between the floor and the hooks
You probably want to add an inch to the eight of the bed to the bottom of the headboard, then add the distance from this extra inch to the hooks on the headboard.
Wall studs? Then find them
When hanging a heavy item such as a headboard, it needs to be properly secured to the wall - especially if you want to avoid unpleasant surprises such as waking up in the middle of the night because the headboard has fallen on you.
Unless you are 100% sure your walls are made of material strong enough to support a wall mounted headboard’s weight, you want to ensure the fasteners are going to be anchored somewhere stable. If your walls hide supporting elements such as studs, you will have to find out where they are, as their location will be where your headboard will be hung from. You can use a stud finder for this job.
Place your fittings
Once you marked with a pencil at least two secure points where your headboard will hang from, you will need to install the fitting elements to the wall. You can use wall anchors for added security when screwing them to the wall. Once you have finished, we advise to test them to ensure they are fixed properly.
Hang your headboard
If you have securely placed the wall fittings at the correct distance between them on the wall, matching the distance of the corresponding fittings behind the headboard, now it is the moment of truth.
If you have measured everything properly, you should be able to hang your wall mounted headboard as if you would with a picture. Given the size of a headboard, this will most likely require help from a second person.
Enjoy your wall mounted headboard
That’s it! Now you can put the bed back into place, align it with your newly fitted wall headboard and enjoy it.
If you want to add another layer of security, you could add extra support by installing an angle iron underneath the headboard. Even in this case, make sure you fix it to the wall by screwing it to secure points (i.e. studs location as before).
