But it is essential to know how to prolong the life of your upholstery by maintaining it properly and treating any stains in the right way. In this guide, we offer our own upholstery cleaning tips.
What fabric is my bed or headboard made from?
The materials used to upholster beds or headboards typically require regular cleaning and maintenance to maintain them in peak condition. But it is important to know what materials have been used, as this will often determine what cleaning methods and products should be used or avoided. A label will usually be attached to your upholstered item stating what it is made from. If you cannot find a label, then the type of material can usually be worked out from its texture and appearance.
What cleaning method should I use?
Here are some of the most common methods, depending on the type of material used:
Velvet
Soak any liquid spillages with a dry white cloth. For other stains, gently blot any stains with the suds from a mix of mild detergent and water. Use straight movements but never rub the velvet. Finally, blot with a dry cloth and use a hairdryer to dry the area faster.
Wool
As wool retains water, any type of wet cleaning must be avoided. Instead, the best way to clean wool upholstery is by steam cleaning.
Linen
Linen upholstery should be vacuumed thoroughly to remove any dust. Meanwhile, fresh stains should be treated by blotting them with a white cloth, but never rubbing, followed by cleaning carefully with a mix of mild detergent and water. After cleaning, open all windows in the bedroom to prevent mould from setting in.
Suede
Use the upholstery brush on your vacuum cleaner to remove any dust, debris and hair, then make circular motions with a soft suede brush. Next, apply the suds from a mix of mild detergent and water with a white cloth to the suede and blot any stains gently. Finally, use a dry white cloth to dry the area.
Leather
For leather, it is advisable to first check the manufacturer’s label to see if there are any specific cleaning instructions. That said, the most common method is to start by vacuuming the leather with a soft brush to remove dust and hair, then applying a slightly damp cloth with some moisturising soap to the surface. Lastly, buff the leather with a soft dry cloth and apply polish if desired.
