What is an ottoman divan base?

This kind of divan base includes a storage area located underneath the mattress, which is accessed by lifting a hinged frame, either at the foot end or along the edge. Although the concept dates back to the 14th century, nowadays, lifting the frame is made easy with the help of a system of gas pistons.

Easy lifting with the help of gas pistons

Thanks to the gas pistons, lifting the mattress requires almost no effort on your part. So, you can always gain easy access to the storage space underneath the mattress. But make sure you choose the type of opening that suits your needs.

The different types of beds

There are two options for opening an ottoman base: from the foot end or at the side.

Foot end gas lift beds

With the foot end opening, the storage space can be accessed from three sides of the bed. There is no need for a bumper to keep the mattress in place while it is being lifted. However, there can be a feeling of a heavy lift because of the location of the pistons.

Side gas lift beds

A side opening can feel comparatively much lighter when lifting. Spacers are built into the frame to keep the headboard clear, while a bumper is fitted to the side to stop the mattress from slipping off. This is ideal for bedrooms with limited floor space at the front of the bed.

Is the gas system safe?

The springs in our ottoman range are robust enough to support a mattress on top and ensure the safety of the gas lift system. Due to their unique storage design, we do not recommend ottoman bases for children’s bedrooms. You are also advised to never leave children or pets alone near the gas lift system.
